Head Coach Marc Marizzaldi of Seton Hill University, a veteran coach of the program, shared a look into his recruiting process and offered some valuable advice for players with the desire to play college baseball. The Griffins are an NCAA Division II powerhouse that have not had a losing season since 2004 and recently made a trip to the NCAA Division II College World Series in 2021. The Griffins compete in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.

Program Overview – Griffins Baseball
Coach Marizzaldi has been leading the Seton Hill baseball program for close to two decades. The veteran head coach has guided the Griffins to two NCAA Division II College World Series appearances, and before the program’s switch to DII, an NAIA College World Series appearance in 2006. Coach Marizzaldi’s career record at Seton Hill is well over .600, and he has continually proved that Seton Hill is one of the most competitive programs in the country. Prior to Seton Hill, Coach Marizzaldi spent one year as an assistant coach at NCAA DI Dusquesne University, his alma mater.
Alongside the Griffin’s on-the-field success, Coach Marizzaldi has also produced multiple MLB draft picks and several other players that have gone on to sign professional contracts.
In 2017, the Seton Hill Baseball complex underwent a major renovation that included the installation of a brand-new artificial playing surface from Astroturf, replacing the previous multi-purpose field from 2005. The renovation also introduced unique features such as a 16-foot fence in left field, an artificial turf game mound and bullpens and chair-back seats with ground-level views for fans. The batting cages were also resurfaced with artificial turf. With a small grandstand that accommodates 100 spectators and side bleachers that seat 50 more, the Seton Hill Baseball complex is known for offering top-notch playing conditions and fan-friendly facilities.

He suggested recruiting schools that are of interest and in line with players’ criteria. This emphasized an important point to players. The recruiting process should be about finding a school that is a good fit, not just a school that will offer up a roster spot. There are so many variables that effect a player’s college experience, and those variables are going to be unique to the individual.
Players should spend time figuring out what is most important to them for their college experience. Some factors might include the size of the school, the facilities, the surrounding area, distance from the hometown, and academic programs. Specifically related to baseball, considering the coaching staff, level of play, training facilities, and location could all be important factors to a player.
There is a program and school out there for every player, but starting the process by determining what is most important personally is a great first step. Throughout the process, there will be influences from parents, coaches, teammates, etc., and while it can be valuable to receive input from friends and family, ultimately, the player is going to know what is best for them and what they are looking for in a college baseball program and school.
